Public Hearing and Board Meeting

by Coy Holcombe.

Tonight, starting at 6:30, the EISD Board of Trustees will be meeting to hold a public hearing on the Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) report. The public hearing will take place in the High School library. The AEIS report is a summary of data about all aspects of the district. The report contains information from TAKS scores to tax rates. As mentioned a few weeks ago, these reports are available on our home page, www.eustaceisd.net. They are located in middle of the page under the section called "District Information". I encourage all interested parties to attend the public hearing tonight.

Then, starting at 7:00 (or immediately after the pubic hearing if it goes longer than 30 minutes), the EISD Board of Trustees will hold their regular monthly meeting. At the beginning of this meeting, the Board will recognize the accomplishments of the cross country teams, the volleyball teams, and the football teams. Please come out and show your support for these student athletes. Everyone is invited and everyone is invited to stay for the entire board meeting.

Student Success Initiative

by Coy Holcombe.

We received notification this week from TEA that our Student Success Initiative (SSI) funding will be greater than anticipated. The SSI is designed to target students in grades in which passing the TAKS test is a requirement for promotion. These funds may be used to supplement instruction by providing additional teachers or instructional aides. The funds may also be used to pay teacher salaries for before school or after school tutorials and/or summer school.

The district had originally planned on receiving approximately $21,000 in this grant. In the notification received this week, TEA is estimating that the grant amount will be $30,855. EISD will use these funds to pay for teacher salaries in affected grades and to pay stipends to teachers that teach summer school in certain grades.

Cross Country Team and Coaches Represent at White Rock Marathon

by Stan Sowers.

This past weekend several of our athletes competed in the White Rock Marathon Relay while Coach Gene Myers ran the half marathon and Coach Josh Sypert ran the full marathon.  The White Rock Marathon held in Dallas each year has become one of the top marathons in the nation with thousands of participants.  Athletes are allowed to chose rather they run in the marathon itself, the half marathon, or in a 5 person relay.

Entering in the high school female marathon relay were athelets Nancy Murff, Kaylan Morton, Shelby Stegent, Jaqlynn Bless, and Amalie Arambula.  The girls relay had an impressive 3rd place finish.  The boys team consisted of athletes Johnny Lee, Greg Haynes, Brett Miner, Zach Bennett, and Zach Arambula.  They finished 7th in a very competitive field.  Coach Myers and parent Johnny Lee Sr. completed the 13.1 mile half marathon in 2:36 min. and 1:40 min. respectfully.  Saving the best for last, or very own head boys and girls cross country coach Josh Sypert  finished the marathon in an impressive time of 3:07.00 qualifying him for the Boston Marathon.

Congratulations to all for their great effort , for showing continued dedication to their sport, and for helping benefit the Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.

Good Will Alive and Well at EHS

by Stan Sowers.

Recently, students and their sponsors raised over $2,100 for Roland Bailey and his family.  As most of you know, Roland had to undergo surgery on his back that required his father Mark to be off work for an extended amount of time.  As usual, the students and staff at EHS wanted to do what they could in order to help friends in need.

The Spanish Club under the sponsorship of teachers Ruth Adame and Lisa Bynum presented Roland with a check for $1,400 after offering a movie and snacks to the student body for a nominal fee.  Girls athletics and their coaches sponsored a bake sale at the high school taking donations for homemade goods.  They raised a total of $716 for the cause.  I for one appreciate and am proud of our students and staff for stepping up whenever there is a need in our community.  Plans are already being made for the upcoming MDA fundraiser that we do on behalf of Roland.

I wish everyone a wonderful holiday and a Merry Christmas.

Bad Weather and School Closing Information

by Coy Holcombe.

Today’s weather reminds me that it is time to update everyone on our school closing information. First, how do we determine if we are going to delay or cancel classes? If there is a chance that roads may be icy or slick, Henry Carter, our transportation director, and myself will be out early driving the major roads in our district. This is the only way to determine the actual condition of the roads. Based on what we find, we make a decision regarding starting school on time, delaying the start of school, or canceling school altogether. We always keep the safety of the students as the prime factor in our decision.

Parents/guardians and community members may find out information about the status of EISD during bad weather by tuning into KCKL (95.9 FM), WBAP (820 AM), NBC 5 (KXAS Dallas), or WFAA-TV Channel 8 (Dallas). We will also post information as soon as possible on our website and marquee. If you have any questions regarding bad weather delays or closure, please email me at cholcombe@eustaceisd.net.

Murchison Foundation Grant

by Coy Holcombe.

EISD thanks the Ginger Murchison Foundation for their very generous grant of $100,000. This grant will be used to provide additional Promethean Boards for our teachers. Over the past several years, the Murchison Foundation has generously contributed to EISD to help with the technology needs of the district. Some of the other projects funded through the Murchison Foundation include the teacher laptop and training program, multimedia projectors for classrooms, and a grant that helped send over 20 faculty members to the ISTE Conference in San Antonio during the summer. EISD is truly thankful for the help that the Murchison Foundation has provided for our teachers and for our students.

Property Tax Balances

by Coy Holcombe.

EISD has recently added a link on their Tax Office webpage that will provide information on the balance of taxpayers’ accounts. To find this link, first go to our homepage, www.eustaceisd.net. In the top right hand corner of our homepage, is a section called "Administration, Board, Jobs". One of the links in this section is for the tax office. Click on that link.

This will take you to the tax office homepage. In the middle of the screen, is a link called "Find your property tax balance". Click on this link. A new page will open with a the cursor in a search box. There are several options for searching at this point. You can search by owner’s name, account number, property address, CAD reference number, or fiduciary number.

The default search parameter is by owner’s name. The owners name must be typed in with the last name first. If you choose to search on something other than the owner’s name, you must change the criteria by clicking on the appropriate button in the "Search By" section.

Once you have done your search, the results are displayed on a new page. At this point, the webpage becomes a little misleading. There are two options listed at the top, "print version" and "Excel version". Do not click on either of these links. Instead, scroll down a little and a series of rectangles appear. The left most rectangle contains the account number of the property. The number is underlined. Click on this account number. A new page will open with all the information on this account, including the amount of property tax owed.

If you have any questions regarding your property taxes, please contact Debbie Myers, our tax collector, at dmyers@eustaceisd.net, or by calling 425-5232.

Handbooks on the Website

by Coy Holcombe.

At our homepage, www.eustaceisd.net, there is a section that contains several different handbooks that provide information about our district that parents/guardians and the general public may find useful. The section is located on the right side of our homepage, just below the "Administration, Board, Jobs" section.

The bus handbook, student handbook, EISD telephone and email directory, and UIL Parent Manual are all located in this section. There is also a "Useful Forms" link that takes you to a page where you can download student transfer requests, the form for reserving school facilities, and employment applications.

While most people are familiar with our bus handbook and student handbook, the UIL Parent Manual contains a wealth of information regarding extracurricular activities. The UIL (University Interscholastic League) is the governing body for all of the district’s extracurricular activities.

I encourage everyone to take a few minutes and explore the contents of this section of our webpage. If you have any questions, please email me at cholcombe@eustaceisd.net.

Band Concert Tomorrow

by Coy Holcombe.

All three EISD bands will be presenting their annual Christmas concert tomorrow. The concert is set to start at 7:00 PM and will be held in the High School auditorium. There is no charge for admission.

The beginning band (6th grade) will start the concert. They will be followed by the 7th and 8th grade band. The High School band will close out the Christmas concert. All three bands have been working for weeks in preparation for this concert. I encourage all community members to come out and hear the sounds of the season as performed by the EISD bands.
