End of the 4th Six Weeks

by Coy Holcombe.

Today marks the end of the 4th six weeks of the school year. For me, this always signals the beginning of the end process of the school year. We will start the banquet season soon. We have baseball, softball, track, soccer, and golf going at the same time. Our TAKS testing will start next week. Field trips will start soon. We have spring break in another two weeks. In other words, the rest of the school year will go by quickly.

Next week, we will be looking at the numbers through the end of the 4th six weeks. As we have in the past, we will examine our attendance numbers and see how these numbers are affecting our state aid.

Our baseball tournament continues today, as well as soccer. Our soccer teams are traveling to Whitehouse this afternoon. The games will begin at 5:30.

Also, this Saturday, February 28, our FFA Booster Club will be hosting its annual chili cookoff and auction. If you have not had an opportunity to attend this event in the past, I encourage you to make plans to attend on Saturday. The chili judging starts at 5:30. This will be followed at 6:00 by a chili supper in which you get to sample many different varieties of chili. At 6:30, the auction starts.  This is always a fun time for everyone. Special thanks goes out to Danny Davis and the rest of the FFA Booster Club for their hard work and dedication in putting this event together.

If you are still in the mood for basketball, EASA is hosting the 5th and 6th grade girls tournament on Saturday. Eustace has two girls teams competing against other area teams. The tournament starts at 8:00 AM and runs all day.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Congratulations Kortni Harris

by Coy Holcombe.

Kortni Harris, 4th grade teacher at Eustace Intermediate, has been selected as the East Texas State Fair Primary Teacher of the Year. Robert Reeve, principal at the Intermediate, was notified last week of the award. On behalf of Eustace ISD, I want to congratulate Kortni on this great accomplishment. It was a well-deserved award.

Also, Eustace will be hosting a high school track meet this afternoon. There will be a total of nine teams participating.

Finally, our varsity baseball tournament gets underway today. The Bulldogs will be playing at 9:00 and 11:00.

Basketball Ends and FFA Brings Home the Awards

by Coy Holcombe.

The basketball season came to an end last night as the Bulldogs fell to the Nevada-Community Braves in bi-district competition. This playoff appearance marked the first time in 12 years that the Bulldogs had advanced to post-district play. I would like to thank head coach Chad Martinez, assistant coaches Jarrett Grant, Stacy Conway, and Calvin Kennedy for their hard work and dedication this season. I would also like to thank all the players, especially the seniors, for providing us with an exciting basketball season. They accomplished many things this season and everyone should be proud of those accomplishments. A special thank you goes out to the parents, grandparents, other relatives, and friends for their support. Thanks to the staff members and community members for their support of the Bulldogs. Finally, I want to extend a special thank you to the students. Our students supported the Bulldogs with pride and class all year long.

On another topic, I want to recognize the FFA ag mechanics program for their accomplishments at the San Antonio show. Our students brought home several awards for their hard work:

Billy Crocker – 24 foot gooseneck lowboy – Blue Ribbon / 1st place Best in Class (awarded approximately $2000 prize pack)
Michael James – 20 foot bumper-pull lowboy – Blue Ribbon / 4th place Best in Class (awarded $150 certificate to Airgas)
Ethan Grimes & Tucker Conway – 24 foot gooseneck lowboy – Blue Ribbon
Ty Browning & Nick Austin – 14 foot Entry Gate – Blue Ribbon
Austin Pogue, Harley Feltman, & Nathan Stegant – Shop table – Blue Ribbon

Every project from Eustace that was exhibited at the San Antonio show received a blue ribbon. This is even more amazing when you consider that there were over 400 total projects from various FFA organizations throughout Texas on display. A special thank you goes out to each and every student for their hard work and dedication. They all put in many long hours on each project. Also, I want to recognize and thank our FFA sponsors, Zach Tappan and Theresa Tindel, for their hard work and dedication. Finally, a special thank you to the FFA Booster Club for their support of our FFA program.

Basketball Playoff Tonight

by Coy Holcombe.

Tonight the varsity basketball team will be traveling to Rockwall Heath High School to take on Nevada-Community in bi-district action. This marks the first time in 12 years that our boys basketball team has made the playoffs. In our last game against Canton, we had tremendous crowd support. It made a difference. I encourage everyone to make the drive to Rockwall and support our Bulldogs.

At the top of this blog is an attachment of the location of Rockwall Heath HS. The location of the high school is denoted by the green pin.

I want to thank all the coaches and other helpers for their work at our Middle School track meet last night. Also, thanks to all the parents and friends that came out and supported our Middle School athletes in their first track meet of the season.

Ag Mechanics Show Off in San Antonio

by Stan Sowers.

Things just keep getting better! The Eustace FFA Ag Mechanics project show team recently competed at the S.A. Ag Mech contest with the projects constructed here on campus. At the S.A. Ag Mech project show there were over 400 projects exhibited. Eustace FFA exhibited 5 projects. The accomplishments of our team was quite impressive. Each project that we exhibited received a blue ribbon (top honor). With receiving a blue ribbon this makes you eligible to be placed in the best of class. Our placings were as follows:

  • Billy Crocker – 24 foot gooseneck lowboy – Blue Ribbon / 1st place Best in Class (awarded approximately $2000 prized pack)
  • Michael James – 20 foot bumper-pull lowboy – Blue Ribbon / 4th place Best in Class (awarded $150 certificate to Airgas)
  • Ethan Grimes & Tucker Conway – 24 foot gooseneck lowboy – Blue Ribbon
  • Ty Browning & Nick Austin – 14 foot Entry Gate – Blue Ribbon
  • Austin Pogue, Harley Feltman, & Nathan Stegant – Shop table – Blue Ribbon

Congratulate these young men and their sponsor Mr. Tappan if you have a chance.  They did put in alot of hard work.

Bulldogs Playoff Bound

by Coy Holcombe.

The Eustace Bulldogs boys basketball team beat Canton last night to secure a playoff berth. It was a hard fought game throughout, with the Bulldogs finally pulling away in the last two minutes. Congratulations goes out to the players, head coach Chad Martinez, and assistant coaches Stacy Conway, Jarrett Grant, and Calvin Kennedy.

I want to say a special thank you to all the fans that came out and supported the Bulldogs last night. We had one of the largest crowds in recent memory at the game. Parents, grandparents, other relatives, friends, staff members, community members, and students all made the game exciting by showing their support for the Bulldogs. I want to say a special thank you for the support that the students gave their Bulldogs last night. It was truly awesome! Also, a special thank you to Todd Felty and Chad Bentley and the Bulldog Band for being at the game and showing their support. Finally, a special thanks goes out to Sandy Sowers and the Bulldog Cheerleaders. They have supported the basketball program all year.

As soon as the playoff site is finalized, we will pass that on to all the Bulldog fans.

Stimulus Bill and EISD

by Coy Holcombe.

Will the stimulus bill recently passed at the national level directly affect EISD? Probably. EISD should realize some additional funding from the passage of this bill. We have seen estimates of this funding, but we have not received any official notification from the state. So, until we receive such notification, and the guidelines for the funding, we are proceeding with plans as normal. As we learn more about this funding, that information will be passed on to you.

I want to remind everyone about the basketball game tonight. Our Bulldogs will be taking on the Eagles from Canton in an important district game. If we win, we go to the playoffs as the third seed: if we lose, we will be in a three-way tie for the third playoff seed. We would then have an elimination playoff with the other two teams to decide the third seed. Tonight’s games will be played in Eustace. The freshman start at 4:30, JV will start at around 6:00, and the varsity will take the court at around 7:30. I encourage everyone to come out tonight and support the Bulldogs!

The soccer teams will be traveling to Athens to take on the Hornets tonight. The first game starts at 5:30.
