Graduation Tomorrow

by Coy Holcombe.

Tomorrow the class of 2009 will graduate. The graduation starts at 10:30 and will be held in the new E. L. Kirk – Bulldog Gym. Doors will open to the public at 9:30. Members of the Eustace Volunteer Fire Department will be on hand to help with the parking. All of the parking closest to the gym will be reserved for handicap use. The parking lot behind the High School will be open for public use.

We will have several hundred chairs set up on the floor for the audience. However, once the ceremony starts, no one will be allowed on the floor. Please plan accordingly.

We are proud that our seniors will be graduating in Eustace for the first time in years. The construction crews and our maintenance staff have worked tirelessly to get the new gym ready for this ceremony. Please understand that while the gym will be ready to host graduation, there are still areas where crews are finishing work. As with all construction projects, needed materials do not necessarily arrive on time. We have experienced a very frustrating delay in getting our restroom partitions from the manufacturer: some have arrived and others have not. We may not be able to open all the restrooms in the foyer tomorrow. We are asking for everyone’s help and understanding in dealing with this situation. Also, in order for us to open as many as possible, our construction firm has brought in spare partitions that will be installed temporarily. Some of these partitions will not match anything else in the gym; but, will serve a need for tomorrow’s graduation.

We are looking forward to honoring our 2009 graduates with a great graduation ceremony tomorrow.

Legislative Update – School Finance

by Coy Holcombe.

The Texas House passed HB 3646 a few days ago. A similar bill, with amendments, was passed out of the Texas Senate. Since the House bill and the Senate bill differ, the bill will have to go to a conference committee to work out the differences.

We have received several spreadsheets comparing our current funding levels with the funding levels in the House and Senate bills. Under our current funding system, EISD is funded at the 47th lowest rate (with regards to target revenue established after the 05-06 school year) in the state. Under the proposed funding plan, EISD would receive additional state funds, but would still have one of the lowest funding rates in the state. According to latest reports, the new funding measure would provide all personnel on the teacher salary schedule with at least an $800 salary increase.

I have been in contact numerous times with our state representative, Betty Brown, and our state senator, Robert Nichols, concerning the funding situation with EISD. Both offices have been very supportive and have asked for feedback about different funding proposals. More updates on school finance will follow.

I want to thank the First Baptist Church of Eustace for hosting the baccalaureate service last night. It was a great evening for all in attendance.

Baccalaureate Service Tonight and Construction Update

by Coy Holcombe.

Tonight, the seniors will be participating in the Baccalaureate service at the First Baptist Church in Eustace. The service begins at 7:00 PM.

Graduation is now just three days away. Cleaning crews were in the gym yesterday getting it ready for Saturday. A paving contractor applied a coat of hot mix and gravel yesterday in the area between the concrete and the existing gravel parking area. This area of the parking lot had been torn out during the construction. A second layer will be applied at a later date. The rubber floor in the weight room was installed over the weekend and construction of the cabinets in all areas of the gym is still ongoing. The padding at the end of the gym was also installed yesterday.Over the next couple of days, our maintenance crews will be assembling the stage for graduation. They will also be assisting in getting the gym ready for Saturday.

The foundation at the transportation facility was poured last Friday. Crews will be back to do some touch up work on the foundation today. The delivery of the metal building will happen in the next week.
