Summer Hours, PaySchools, and School Finance

by Coy Holcombe.

As I mentioned yesterday, the district will be starting summer hours this week. We have been on our summer hours program for about 7 years now. We take our normal summer hours and condense them into four days. We then completely shut down the district on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. One of our main goals of this program is to keep the electrical costs of the district down during the hottest part of the summer. It also provides our summer school students with a good break each week. While our posted hours will be 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM, we will have staff available in the district office from 7:00 AM until 5:00 PM Monday through Thursday.

PaySchools has changed the way they are charging convenience fees. Before, we were able to have dollar amount increments that allowed us to offset the service charge assessed by PaySchools. Now, PaySchools has gone to just one service fee for all dollar amounts. As a result, we have had to eliminate paying transfer fees and school taxes through the PaySchools system. The processing fees charged by PaySchools, 3.5% of the total amount charged, would be too great an amount for the district to absorb. Our convenience fee is now $1.50 per transaction.

The Texas House and Senate have passed a compromise bill on school finance. This bill will provide additional funding to all districts. Since this bill was just passed yesterday, it is still too early to know for sure how this will impact the finances of EISD. More information will be coming about this finance bill in the future.
