by Coy Holcombe.

Andrea Plunk has received a nomination from Congressman Jeb Hensarling to attend the U. S. Military Academy at West Point. Andrea is currently a senior at EHS.

According to a press release from Congressman Hensarling’s office, "Candidates interested in attending a military service academy must undergo a rigorous selection process and receive a nomination from a Member of Congress, the Vice President, or from the Department of Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps. These nominations are determined based on academic performance, college entrance test scores, physical aptitude, medical certification, extracurricular activities and demonstrated leadership potential." Graduates of the Service Academies are appointed upon active duty as commissioned officers, and serve in the appropriate branch of military for a minimum of five years.

Congratulations to Andrea and her family on this great honor!

Part II

by Stan Sowers.

We have the 1st semester behind us and we’re now underway with the 2nd.  This week we spent benchmarking to see where each student stands in relation to passing their upcoming TAKS exams.  The results of the exams will not only inform teachers and students of weaknesses that need addressed, but will determine attendance on Flex Days.  This year we offered more incentives to the students with hope to get greater effort.  For each benchmark passed a student will get his/her name in a hat.  Two names from each grade level will be drawn and recieve a $50.00 gift card.  Along with this a student will be able to exempt 1 Flex day if they pass 3 of the four tests.  In the past if they failed only 1 they had to attend all 4 Flex days.

As I mentioned to the students in our general session the first day back, I thought we had a great 1st semester but I’m looking for an even better 2nd.  They should have high expectations of us and of themselves.  Together we’ll be successful.

We will be monitoring the weather very closely today. We will also be monitoring the condition of the roads. It is possible that we may cancel any after school activities if it is deemed that the safety of our students is in question. It is also possible that we may cancel or alter the soccer tournament to be held in Eustace over the next three days. A decision on this will be made later this morning.

If we find that the roads are becoming treacherous, we will not hesitate in dismissing classes early. If this happens, every effort will be made to notify parents in a timely manner.

Over the next few days, we will be experiencing cold temperatures that have not been in our area in about 10 years. I am asking for everyone to work together to keep our children safe.Tomorrow morning, we will allow extra time for our bus routes. Please do not allow your children to wait outside any longer than is absolutely necessary. Our buses will make allowances for this.

School Board Recognition Month

by Coy Holcombe.

From the Texas Association of School Boards:

"Governor Rick Perry has proclaimed January 2010 as School Board Recognition Month to help build awareness of the crucial role an elected board of trustees plays in our communities and schools. Plan now to show your school board members you appreciate their dedication and hard work. They are extraordinary people who voluntarily tackle the enormous job of governing school districts. Their actions and decisions affect the present and future lives of our children."

Our local school board spends countless hours working to make EISD the best it can possibly be. I encourage everyone to thank these people for their hard work and dedication to the students of EISD.

Diane Russ – Board President
Thomas Frazier – Board Vice President
