Varsity Boys Track District Champs!

by Coy Holcombe.

The varsity boys track team staged a furious comeback last night to win the District 14-3A championship. Going into the 200 meter dash, the boys trailed Van by 23 points. The Bulldogs placed 1, 2, and 5 in the 200 and then placed 3, 4 and 5 in the 1600. That put EHS up by 4 points over Van. The Bulldogs sealed the district championship by winning the 1600 meter relay. Congratulations to coach Kenneth Henderson and all the varsity boys track team for their victory!

The varsity girls also had a strong showing at the meet. There were many excellent performances and we have several girls that qualified for regionals. Congratulations to coach Shannon Smith and all the girls on their performances.

The JV boys and JV girls also competed very well. I look forward to these young men and young ladies competing for EHS for the next several years.

Special thanks goes out to several people for their help in ensuring that the district track meet was a first class event: Jack Wallace, director of maintenance, and all his crew for making sure that the facilities were in top notch condition; Shelley Compton, booster club president, and all the officers and members of the booster club for providing a great concession stand; Robert Cook and Gene Myers for their work with the computer timing; Doug Wendel, athletic director, and Chuck Powers, girls coordinator, for their work in organizing and running the meet; All the volunteers and student workers that helped with the meet;  All the parents and fans that supported the runners throughout the meet; And finally, the school board and community for providing our district with the best facilities and equipment around to host the meet.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

District Track Meet, Day 2 & Round-Up Numbers

by Coy Holcombe.

The first day of the district track meet was great! The weather was beautiful and the meet went very smoothly. We have already had several athletes (both boys and girls) qualify for regionals. The finals start today at 5:30. I encourage everyone to come out and support the Bulldogs. Admission is free and the Booster Club will be providing a concession stand with food and drinks.

On another note, we had our annual kindergarten and pre-k round-up this week. The round-up gives parents a chance to pre-register students for kindergarten and pre-k classes. It also gives the district and idea of how many students to prepare for in the fall. Below are the results of this year’s round-up:

Kindergarten:  9 students registered  + 2 others we know for sure are coming = 11 students  (63 currently in 4 year old programs – Total for next year would be 74 students at this time)

3 year olds:  17 qualified for this class that takes no more than 17 – FULL with waiting list

4 year olds- Head Start:  14 new students + 17 from our 3 year old program = Total HS 4 year olds:  32 students  (each class allowed 20 students max – so one class is full)

4 year olds – Pre-K – 15 students qualified, 3 more interested in tuition  ( 22 students allowed in this class)

OVERALL –  somewhat better numbers than last year’s Round Up

Thanks to Dianne Shaffer, Primary principal, for supplying this information.

Food Service Program Receives Grant

by Coy Holcombe.

We were notified yesterday that our food service program received a grant of over $33,000 for a new double stack oven for the Primary/Intermediate kitchen. I want to thank Rosemary Abbott for her work in securing this grant for EISD.

A reminder that EISD will be hosting the middle school district track meet today. The meet gets underway at 4:00.

We will also be hosting Canton in baseball this evening. The first pitch will be at 6:30.

Softball will be traveling to Canton tonight. This is a change in the original schedule because Canton came to Eustace for the first game do to poor field conditions in Canton. The game will start at 6:00.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Program Budget Committee

by Coy Holcombe.

Over the past several months, a committee made up of staff members from each campus and directors of all locally funded programs have been working on budget recommendations for the 2010-2011 school year. With an enrollment that is less than previous years, it has been clear that cutbacks were going to be needed to balance the budget for next year. This committee has put in many hours examining every aspect of the budget, talking with other staff members,  and making recommendations.

Certainly, making recommendations to reduce spending is never an easy task; however, the committee members did an excellent job in this area . We are about 75% done at this point. Through the efforts of the committee we were able to overcome the deficit that we were facing. I want to thank everyone has participated in this process. Your work is making a difference.

Committee Members:

High School – Chuck Powers, Kathleen Krumm, Theresa Tindel, and Stan Sowers

Middle School – Dale Burk, Clay Tracy, Michelle Swan, and Karyn Mullen

Intermediate School – Jackie Rowley, Sandra Hagood, Julie Gray, and Robert Reeve

Primary School – Deanna Haynes, Debbie McConathy, Sherri Purselley, and Dianne Shaffer

Directors – Doug Wendel, Todd Felty, Jack Wallace, Henry Carter, and Gene Myers

Central Office – Janice Beasely

EISD Receives Grant and Qualifies for Texas Steps Up Program

by Coy Holcombe.

EISD received official notification yesterday that we had been award over $79,000 in in Mathematics Instructional Coaches Pilot Program. The grant is designed to improve the mathematics instruction in the district through professional development.

The grant was a competitive grant through the Texas Education Agency. EISD along with many other districts in the state applied for this grant. I want to thank and congratulate Janice Beasley, assistant superintendent, for her work in securing this grant for EISD.

We also received notification from TEA that EISD had met all the requirements for the Texas Steps Up Program. This program is based on how districts invested their State Fiscal Stabilization Funds. Only 17% of the districts in the state invested 81% or more of these funds into one or more of the Steps Up activities. EISD was part of this 17%. As a result of this, EISD will be eligible for grant priority points, technical assistance, and future funding opportunities. The EISD Board of Trustees made some key decisions during the 09-10 budget adoption that enabled our district to qualify for this program.
