Thanks for a Great Year!

It’s hard to believe that the 2010-2011 school year is over. In some school years, there comes a point where time really starts to drag. That did not happen this year. I want to thank everyone for making this another great year:

Thanks to the teachers, counselors, librarians, technology integration specialists, nurse, and the instructional aides for working tirelessly in providing a world-class education to the students.

Thanks to Rosemary Abbott and the food service employees for their work in providing about 1,200 meals a day to the students and staff.

Thanks to Jack Wallace and the maintenance and custodial staff for not only keeping our facilities in the absolute best condition possible, but for saving the district thousands of dollars with their knowledge and expertise.

Thanks to Henry Carter and all the employees in the transportation department for their work in taking care of our vehicles and in transporting hundreds of students safely to school and back home again on a daily basis.

Thanks to all the booster clubs for all the hours spent helping to promote the students of EISD.

Thanks to our technology department for all the work they do behind the scenes.

Thanks to the employees in our business office and administration office. They are simply the best at what they do in the state.

Thanks to the campus secretaries, receptionists, attendance clerks, and nurse aides for taking care of all the stuff that usually goes unnoticed, but is very important.

Thanks to the principals and assistant principals for everything they do to make sure their campuses are providing the best education possible for our students.

Thanks to all the coaches for the long hours and tireless effort they put in to making sure our athletes are well prepared.

Thanks to our band directors for their work and dedication in providing our students with an award winning music program.

Thanks to our school board members for the many hours put into serving the district and for providing for the needs of the students and staff.

A special thank you to our assistant superintendent, Janice Beasley, for her hard work and dedication to the students of EISD.

A special thank you to the parents, grandparents, other relatives, and friends for their work and support in their children’s education.

Finally, a very special thank you to the students of EISD. You have worked so hard this year. Your hard work and dedication have made this a great year.

I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable summer break!

Property Sale

Over the past couple of weeks, EISD has been advertising about property for sale in Indian Harbor. These properties are undeveloped lots with appraised values between $1,000 and $1,250. EISD is currently selling these properties for $100 each. To see a complete listing of the properties, click on this link:

To purchase a property, bring cash, money order or cashiers check in the amount of $100 along with the Lot Number of the property to the EISD Tax Office. Debbie Myers, our tax collector, will assist you with the rest.

It is our goal to sell all of the properties in Indian Harbor currently struck-off to EISD by the end of summer. If you have any questions, you can contact me at or Debbie Myers at

Update on School Finance

Going into the Memorial Day weekend, it appeared that the legislature had a school finance plan wrapped up. However, a filibuster in the senate kept the plan from being voted on by the senate. Now, the legislature is in a special session to work on school finance.

The school finance plan that was on the table at the end of the regular session combined plans by Representative Eissler and Senator Shapiro. This combined plan used proration in the first year (11-12), and a move away from target revenue in the second year (12-13). While it was certainly not perfect, it did offer the best numbers for Eustace ISD than any other plan that I have seen this session. In fact, it really was not even close. I know that I was probably in the minority of superintendents that actually supported this plan. I understand that our school finance system needs to be restructured to account for inequities within the system. At the same time, I understand that if I have a choice of losing $540,000 in funding or $800,000 in funding, I am going to choose the $540,000 every time. At some point in time, we have to make a stand on what is best for Eustace ISD.

This same bill has been re-introduced in the special session as SB 1. I will continue to support this bill; not because it is a perfect school finance bill for the state of Texas, but because it does the least amount of damage to Eustace ISD.

I will continue to provide updates regarding school finance as more information becomes available through this special session.
