Volleyball and Lawsuit Update

Congratulations to the the JV and Varsity volleyball teams on their victories against Teague last night! The Lady Bulldogs will be traveling to Blooming Grove on Friday.

We received word yesterday that the Texas Taxpayer and Student Fairness Coalition has filed their lawsuit against the state regarding the current school funding system. Currently, there are over 160 school districts throughout the state that have joined this lawsuit. It is expected that this number will continue to grow in the coming weeks and months. The lawsuit filed is comprehensive in nature in that it does not focus on just one aspect of the funding system. Instead, it focuses on all of the following: adequacy, suitability, equal protection, meaningful discretion, statewide property tax, efficiency, student equity and taxpayer equity.

Under the current system, weighted student revenues range from under $5,000 per student to more than $12,000 per student. Eustace ISD is one of the districts that is funded at under $5,000 per student. In addition, tax rates range from $.70 to $1.17 per $100 of property value. Some districts are only able to generate $49.80 per penny per student of adopted tax rate. Other districts are able to generate almost $69.00 per penny per student of adopted tax rate. The taxpayers of EISD should not be asked to provide funding levels that are being provided by the state to other districts.

I will pass along further information from the Coalition when it is received.
