Each August, the Eustace ISD Board of Trustees adopts a budget for the upcoming school year and adopts a tax rate for the upcoming school year. This year, the Board approved a Maintenance and Operations budget of slightly more than $13 million. This was an increase from the previous year’s budget of $12.2 million. The increase in the budget was due largely to an overall increase in our district’s enrollment.
The Maintenance and Operations (M & O) portion of the budget includes money received from the state and money generated by local taxes. These are the funds that pay for the day to day operations going on throughout the district. The M & O portion of the budget pays for salaries and benefits, instructional programs, supplies, transportation, maintenance and utilities, extracurricular activities, technology, security, employee and student travel, career and technology programs, library services, and contracted services with other entities. The M & O portion of the budget is by far the largest component of EISD’s overall budget. About the only thing that M & O does not provide directly is food service. Our food service budget is a totally separate budget.
EISD also receives other state and federal funds to provide specific programs. For example, we are receiving state funds specifically for our Pre-K program and we are receiving federal funds to provide additional instruction above and beyond our regular educational program. I will discuss the federal funds in more detail in a future post.
The Board of Trustees adopted a tax rate that is exactly the same as last year’s rate: $1.04 for M & O and $0.19 for our Interest and Sinking fund. The Interest and Sinking (I & S) is used to pay for the voter approved bonds that were sold by our district. Over the next few weeks, I will be going into greater detail on how our budget is estimated, federal grants, and special programs. As always, if you have any questions regarding budget issues, or other issues, please do not hesitate to contact me at email@example.com.
